About The Sea Kings

The Sea Kings Plunder Your Village and Steal Your Women – Perfect Porridge music blog – January 2010

The Sea Kings are all originally from the jagged and romantic landscape of Cornwall, south-west UK. Having been friends and occasional bandmates during their teenage years, each member moved up to London separately in the early Millennium to pursue careers in music, exchanging the coastline for concrete and the ocean for rush hour.

Appearances on the Greenwich music scene as lone singer-songwriters brought the trio together to accompany each other. After a summer travelling and busking around Europe – encountering police from almost every country in the Schengen Zone – the three resolved to create something new, together. They began collaborating on new material, and the band was born.

The sound that The Sea Kings make is rooted in folk music, with branches twisting through crunchy jazz rhythms and contemporary pop melodies, all under an acoustic canopy. Their lyrics convey images of towering cliffs and sandy beaches, reflecting a shared longing for home derived from a life of self-imposed exile. In September 2009 The Sea Kings rejoined the gigging circuit, winning over audiences and promoters with their ruthlessly-rehearsed arrangements, storm-blown beats and solid-as-granite vocal harmonies.

Close your eyes and you can feel the sand between your toes, taste the salty sea air, smell that heady mix of salt, seaweed and seagull droppings. It's the sound of wizened old bearded indie kids swopping tales around a roaring fire while quaffing flagons of real ale' (The Devil Has The Best Tuna music blog - January 2010).

The Sea Kings are currently recording their debut LP, and have had their songs played on FM radio and countless podcasts, performed in radio sessions and been written about in numerous music and culture blogs, as well as publications such as UK indie music paper The Stool Pigeon.

On 9th April 2010, a four-track EP, An Introduction To The Sea Kings, was released through online distribution service Record Union, containing songs that will feature on the album (scheduled for release in 2011).

The Sea Kings are; James Wills (Vocals/Guitar, Joe Holtaway (Vocals/Mandolin) and Jake Alexander (Vocals/Percussion/Cello).
